A WOMAN escaped death when a driverless car hurtled down a mountain pass and plunged into a 60ft ravine at the weekend.

Sheila Waterman, 58, was sitting in the back seat of a Volvo parked at the summit of the 1,200ft Honister Pass, near Keswick, Cumbria, when the family's pet alsatian jumped from the front seat, knocking the car's automatic gear out of 'park'. The estate ran down the 1 in 4 hill and was destroyed. Mrs Waterman walked away from the wreckage, but the dog was killed.
