US ambassador advises against intervention in Somalia

WASHINGTON - The US ambassador to Kenya cautioned the State Department this month not to 'embrace the Somali Tarbaby' by sending in troops and risking casualties at the hands of 'natural-born guerrillas,' AP reports. A cable written by Smith Hempstone said Somalia's chaotic condition was beyond 'the quick fix so beloved of Americans'.
