Fifty-four US Catholic bishops, claiming that seven years of sanctions had caused the death of more than 1 million Iraqis, yesterday urged President Bill Clinton, in a letter, to work for "immediate cessation" of UN sanctions, saying they violate the human rights of Iraqis because they "deprive innocent people of food and medicine." The Security Council and Clinton administration say the embargo will remain as long as Iraq refuses to destroy all chemical, biological, and other weapons of mass destruction. - AP, Washington
