A man was shot dead yesterday by a loyalist group in east Belfast.

Samuel Rice, 29, of Newtownards, Co Down, was killed while visiting a house in Solway Street. Two masked gunmen walked in and opened fire at point-blank range, hitting him several times in the head and body as he sat on a settee.

The banned Ulster Volunteer Force said last night it killed Mr Rice because he failed to heed warnings about alleged involvement in drug-dealing.
