VS Pritchett, the master critic, dies

VS Pritchett, a master of literary criticism and the short story, has died at the age of 96. He died on Thursday at the Whittington Hospital, London, said his son, Oliver Pritchett. Knighted in 1975 for services to literature, Pritchett published more than 40 books: stories, novels, essays, criticism, travel and autobiography. He was noted for his brilliant pen portraits in his stories and journalism.

From 1926 he was a contributor to the left-wing weekly the New Statesman. His books included a biography of Anton Chekhov and the travel book Dublin: A Portrait. He edited the Oxford Book of Short Stories in 1981. Obituary, page 22
