ENGLAND'S hopes of a third consecutive rugby union Grand Slam ended in Cardiff yesterday when they were beaten 10-9 by Wales. England were leading 9-3 when Ieuan Evans, the Wales captain, scored the game's only try. Neil Jenkins converted and there were no more scores for the remaining 42 minutes.

France recorded their 12th successive victory over Scotland in Paris, winning 11-3. Thierry Lacroix scored the only try.

Phil Tufnell was fined pounds 500 by the management of the England cricket team after incidents yesterday during the match against the Rest of India at Vishakhapatnam.

He had exchanged words with the umpire, A V Jayaprakash and was found guilty of 'ungentlemanly conduct towards an umpire' and 'general behaviour considered unbecoming'.
