Some would say the addition of a hash brown to KFC’s Zinger Tower Burger was a controversial move, but it’s nothing compared to the variation reportedly found in one McDonald’s burger recently – when one couple discovered that their meal contained traces of marijuana.

Pregnant 23-year-old Britanny Songer and her 31-year-old fiancée Cory Long noticed the surprise green ingredient as soon as they tasted their McDouble meal at a branch in Iowa.

Ms Songer told the Ottumwa Evening Post: “It tasted bad, and I thought maybe it was because he had cologne on his hands.

“But then I opened the burger and the cheese was just covered with weed. You couldn’t smell McDonald’s anymore. You could only smell the illegal drugs that were on it.”

Later in the day, Songer and Long went back to McDonald’s to call the police who sent the burger off for lab testing at Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

Lieutenant Jason Bell of the Ottumwa Police Department confirmed that the green substance on the burger “appears to be consistent with marijuana.”

Bell said that if the substance was marijuana, the police would press charges for Administering a Harmful Substance which is a Class D Felony, and the couple would be likely to sue McDonald’s.

Lieutenant Bell added: “I’ve seen a lot of stuff, but never something like this.”

The police believe it to be an isolated incident as there have been no other similar reports.

While the police await the results of the lab tests, they are investigating McDonald’s employees; so far they have found drug paraphernalia on one McDonald’s employee but no further action has been taken.

Songer says she fears for the health of her baby: “I have a very, very tiny foetus growing inside me right now and I don’t know if that harmed it at all. It’s a very scary thought,” she told the Ottumwa Evening Post.
