Mel, a two-year-old Welsh terrier, was named top dog at Crufts last night after winning the prestigious Best in Show award.

The dog is owned by Judy Averis, of Cheadle, Staffordshire. She posed for the cameras with the animal, named after the film star Mel Gibson, after scooping the award at the four-day show, which organisers hoped would attract up to 100,000 visitors. Mel's kennel name is Champion Saredon Forever Young.
