Public transport: Three mainline trains in four were cancelled. Eurostar services were cut by a third. The Paris Metro ran a skeleton service. Paris buses were reduced by three-quarters. In Strasbourg, Bordeaux and Toulouse there were delays and cancellations but in Lyons, Marseilles and Nantes privatised services ran normally.

Air travel: Strike by controllers closed several airports in the south of the country.

Schools: Thousands of schools closed or offered pupils little more than supervision.

Post: Few deliveries but main post offices were open and offered a minimum service.

Hospitals: emergency services and basics only.

Police: forbidden to strike but refused to hand out parking tickets, substituting fake tickets explaining the strike.

Government and local authority offices shut.

Forecasters refused to predict the weather.
