An 18-year-old Catholic woman died in hospital in Northern Ireland last night after being shot in the head by a gunman while staying with her boyfriend's family, who are Protestant.
A man arrested some hours later was being questioned about what was feared to be a sectarian murder by loyalists. Bernadette Martin was asleep in the house at Soldierstown Road, Aghalee, County Antrim, when a gunmen entered through an unlocked back door and shot her as she lay in bed. She was hit up to four times in the head and face.
