Women ride into men's territory

Twenty women on horseback yesterday rode through the town of Hawick in the Scottish borders to make their mark in history. For the first time women were allowed to join the previously men-only "town ride", a tradition dating back to the 1500s in which townsfolk mark out the town boundaries. When four women took part unofficially last year they faced jeers as they rode, and the ensuing row divided the town. Despite the recent compromise, however, women will still be excluded from the main event on 6 June.
