Randa Becker, a fashion student whose designs include an evening gown made of newspaper and recycled plastic costing less than 50p (pictured left) has been named the Cancer Research Campaign's Recycled Fashion Student of 1995, writes Glenda Cooper.

Ms Becker, 22, a final-year student at the American College, in London, said the inspiration for the dress was the Queen of Hearts from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.

The winning designs, being shown at the Saatchi Gallery, London, were made from rags, clothes and bric-a-brac rejected by the CRC's 222 charity shops. They were chosen by a panel of judges which included fashion editors, comedians and designers Helen Storey, Philip Treacy and Edina Ronay.

Second place went to Charlene Yap Wei Wei. She collected crisp packets for a wrap, pictured right, based on a costume from her native Malaysia.
