Troops and Hutu tribal gunmen battled in suburbs of the Burundi capital yesterday and the Interior Minister, Leonard Nyangoma, said about 1,000 people had died in just over two days, Reuter reports from Bujumbura. Hundreds of casualties jammed local hospitals and aid workers said thousands of civilians were fleeing the suburbs where the Hutus and minority Tutsi-dominated army were fighting.
