SAO PAULO (Reuter) - At least 111 prisoners were killed and 17 policemen injured in a five-hour riot in a Sao Paulo jail known as 'the powder keg' on Friday. The uprising began when rival gangs at Carandiru Penitentiary, which houses 7,300 inmates, attacked each other with knives and clubs.
The conflict quickly became a general uprising when inmates seized guns from guards. Police regained control after exchanging gunfire with the prisoners.
