German police have detained 169 left-wing militants who fought pitched battles with them during traditionally violent May Day demonstrations in Berlin, Reuter reports from Berlin.

Criminal proceedings have been started against 115 of them on charges ranging from damaging property to seriously disturbing the peace. The militants, part of a demonstration by 5,500 leftists, threw fire bombs and stones at police who responded with water cannons and tear-gas to quell the riot.
