New Delhi (AFP) - Sikh rebels continued attacking police targets in Punjab and enforced a strike in parts of the northern Indian state to mourn and avenge the killing of an insurgent leader by security men early this week.

The overnight violence in Punjab claimed 17 more lives, including that of an officer and nine relatives of policemen, and prompted a security alert in New Delhi against possible attacks by Sikh rebels.

The latest killings of officers and their relatives took the death toll from the retaliatory strikes to 57 since Monday, creating fears about police morale.
