250,000 whites look to emigrate

JOHANNESBURG (Reuter) - A South African research group said yesterday that more than 250,000 whites were thinking of emigrating because of economic problems, crime and political uncertainty. The Human Sciences Research Council said a 'frightening number' of white school-leavers, particularly Afrikaans-speakers, were thinking of leaving the country. Although not all might be actively seeking emigration, the numbers 'have never been this high', said an official.

In contrast, more than 1,800 professionals, including engineers, doctors, accountants and teachers, migrated to South Africa during 1991, but this was 447 less than in 1990.
