SRINAGAR, INDIA (Reuter) - At least 33 people were killed and several injured in the Kashmiri town of Sopore yesterday in clashes between separatist militants and Indian security forces, officials said. They said the clashes broke out after militants attacked paramilitary forces in the town 35km (22 miles) north- west of Srinagar, summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir state.
Witnesses said paramilitary troops fired indiscriminately, and set houses and shops on fire in retaliation for the attack in the crowded Arampura area. Only one trooper was killed and another injured.
