Factional fighting between left-wing guerrillas has been blamed for the massacre of at least 35 people in Colombia's Uraba region, on the Caribbean coast, writes Colin Harding.

The dead were all supporters of the Hope, Peace and Liberty party (EPL), made up mainly of former guerrillas. Former comrades in arms, or members of the rival Rebel Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), are suspected of responsibility. About 1,000 people have died in political violence in Uraba in the past year, as parties and armed groups manoeuvred for control of the rich, banana-growing region before local elections in March.
