40 rebels killed

Russian troops killed some 40 Tajik rebels who had attempted to cross the Amu-Darya river from Afghanistan, AFP reports from Dushanbe.

The rebels, who are supporters of the Islamic-democrat coalition that was ousted from power here last year, attempted to enter Tajikistan on Thursday, the Russian general staff said.
