Some 50 people lost their sight in northern India after surgeons operated on their eyes in a project jointly funded by a Canadian organisation and New Delhi, AFP reports from New Delhi.

Officials and a newspaper said the blindings occurred last month after Indian surgeons operated on people free of charge in villages near Aligarh, north of New Delhi. Doctors said unhygienic conditions probably caused the blindings.
