LA PAZ (AP) - An avalanche of rain-soaked mud buried a gold mining camp at Llipi in the foothills of the Bolivian Andes, killing at least 50 people. Hundreds of people may be missing, buried under 700,000 cu ft of mud. About 1,200 miners and their families lived in the camp.
President Jaime Paz Zamora ordered the mobilisation of military civil defence units to help with rescue operations.
Most of the region is covered in sub-tropical jungle, but gold mining has eroded the forest cover.
