An underground explosion at a South African coal mine yesterday left 53 people missing, AP reports from Johannesburg. The blast occurred at the Middelbult coal mine at Secunda, 60 miles south-east of Johannesburg, said an official of Secunda Collieries.

He said a team specially trained to deal with underground accidents was working to provide ventilation to the affected areas.
