Abidjan (Reuter) - Ivory Coast has freed 76 political prisoners, including the main opposition leader, Laurent Gbagbo. Supporters said Mr Gbagbo, head of the Ivorian Popular Front, and 75 others jailed after a march turned into a riot in February, left Abidjan's central prison on Friday.

In the Central African Republic, security forces beat to death an opposition leader, Dr Claude Conjugo, opposition sources said. A local Reuter correspondent saw his body in Bangui's main hospital.
