Prisoners of war are crammed into cells in the town of Gudauta. The bloody civil war has been dragging on for a year now, but in the last week Georgia's President, Eduard Shevardnadze, and Boris Pastukhov, a Russian envoy, have approved a draft ceasefire agreement. Relations between the two countries were strained by Georgian allegations that Moscow was providing support for the secessionists.
