13,000 flee to UN facilities after attempted coup in South Sudan

More than 13,000 people have sought refuge at UN facilities in South Sudan following violence associated with an alleged coup attempt.

The military have “cleared out remnants” of soldiers accused of mounting the coup attempt, Foreign Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin said.

The coup attempt happened on Sunday when a group of soldiers raided the weapons store within the main army barracks in Juba but were repulsed by loyalists, sparking gunfights.

At least 26 people, mostly soldiers, have since died in the violence.
