President Jacob Zuma has appointed Mogoeng Mogoeng as Chief Justice of South Africa, despite accusations that the judge has been lenient on rapists and is homophobic.

Justice Mogoeng is a pastor in an evangelical church that condemns homosexuality. Social justice, women and gay rights groups, opposition parties and three bar associations had written submissions against the nomination.
