President Jacob Zuma has appointed Mogoeng Mogoeng as Chief Justice of South Africa, despite accusations that the judge has been lenient on rapists and is homophobic.

Critics of the new Chief Justice have said they will fight his appointment in the Constitutional Court, which he now heads.

Justice Mogoeng is a pastor in an evangelical church that condemns homosexuality. Social justice, women and gay rights groups, opposition parties and three bar associations had written submissions against the nomination.
