A unit of 11 British soldiers stationed in war-torn Sierra Leone has not been in contact with its base for more than 12 hours, it was confirmed today.
A Ministry of Defence spokesman confirmed reports that there had been no communication with the Royal Irish Regiment soldiers, who were stationed in the town of Benguema, since Friday lunchtime when radio contact was lost.
The spokesman said "standard procedures" were in place to try to locate the troops, who also have a soldier from the Sierra Leone army with them, but a kidnap situation could not be ruled out.
