Nearly 280,000 teachers in Kenya stayed away from work yesterday to demand long overdue pay raises, paralysing resumption of classes after holidays.

Wilson Sossion, chairman of the National Union of Teachers, said his organisation's 240,000 members did not report to work in response to the union's call for strike action. The secretary general of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, Akelo Misori, also confirmed that his union's 38,000 members had joined the protest by not showing up for work.
