Cell phone video filmed by Chinese tourist taken hostage in Mali

Video has emerged that is purportedly from a hotel in Mali’s capital Bamako where as many as 170 people were held hostage by armed gunmen.

It is believed around 10 men burst into the Radisson Blu hotel, a luxury complex frequented by foreign tourists and businessmen, at around 8am on Friday morning.

A spokesperson for the hotel chain confirmed a situation was unfolding and said 140 guests and 30 members of staff were “locked” in by the attackers.

Among those held are believed to be a number of Chinese individuals, although it remains unclear whether they were on holiday in Bamako or as part of a mining conference that was taking place when the attack unfolded.

The video is believed to have been filmed from a room inside the hotel, however, The Independent were unable to verify this. It was released by Chinese media China Xinhua News.
