A ship carrying hundreds of British passengers on a £2,000-a-head, two-week cruise has been targeted by pirates in the Indian Ocean. Holidaymakers on board The Spirit of Adventure had a formal dinner interrupted to be told pirates were approaching.

The 350 guests and 200 crew of the ship, operated by British company Acromas, were asked to go to the main lounge and sit on the floor until the danger had passed.

The speedboat carrying the pirates came within "several hundred metres" of the ship, which was 100 miles off Zanzibar. The captain sped the ship up, and managed to lose the pirate vessel.
