Two leading Ugandan opposition figures and several members of parliament were arrested yesterday during a "walk to work" in protest at high fuel and food prices. Kizza Besigye and Norbert Mao, who were second and third behind President Yoweri Museveni in last month's presidential election, were arrested in the capital, Kampala.
Police accused Mr Besigye of obstructing the traffic by sitting on a road for 30 minutes. But a supporter said Mr Besigye was stopped by police while on the walk, and then sat down in protest.
