The US health research ethics unit dropped scientific misconduct charges against Robert Gallo that centred on his role in identifying the virus that causes Aids, Reuter reports from Washington. The action by the Office of Research Integrity ends an appeal by Dr Gallo, who in 1983 claimed to be the first to identify the virus that causes Aids.
His claim was disputed by the French researcher Luc Montagnier at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, and Dr Gallo admitted that the virus he isolated was probably derived from one loaned to him by Mr Montagnier.
