ALGIERS - Special courts in the Algerian capital and in Oran, to the west, have condemned 17 people to death for terrorism and subversion, AFP reports. The sentences were handed down at the weekend and four of the 17 were condemned in absentia.
The government has pledged to step up its fight against the banned Islamic Salvation Front, blamed for this month's murder of a former prime minister.
