A 15-year-old girl has been shot by a real gun during a water gun fight at a party in Spring, Texas.

Police told KPRC the teenager and a 40-year-old man were outside playing with water pistols on Saturday when a 9mm handgun ended up in the man's hands.

He then shot the girl in the shoulder, an inch from her neck. She was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital.

A witness told KTRK: "When the 40-year-old man went to go get his dry clothes, he had a gun somewhere in there.

"And when he went to holster it he was spinning it on his finger, he pulled the trigger and accidentally shot her near the collarbone."

A stray bullet also hit a car door several houses down the road.

The man was taken into custody but it is unclear whether he will face charges.

The teenager is in a stable condition and is expected to recover.
