A four-year-old girl has been shot in the head and killed during a road rage incident in New Mexico, officials said.

The circumstances were not immediately clear, but the child was shot while driving with her parents on I-40, Albuquerque police said.

The child died after being transported to hospital.

“I have never seen it before. I’ve seen tragic loss of children in car crashes," Gordon Eden, Chief of Albuquerque Police Department, said.

"This is one of those crimes that is unexplainable. No way to explain your way out of this. We need to rise up as a community and say enough is enough.”

Police have not yet released information about the suspect.

"We have absolutely no suspect information at this time," he said. "We need the community'shelp. You had to have seen something. Please call us."
