A man concerned that his hometown in Arkansas is losing its “hillbilly heritage” has founded an event designed to discourage gentrification: the World Championship Squirrel Cook-Off.
Joe Wilson, a 39-year-old construction project manager, told the Wall Street Journal the event held in Bentonville at the weekend – the second of its kind – was intended to stave off big-city types and remind locals of their roots.
Teams from nine states competed to find the finest way of creating a squirrel-based culinary delight. Brothers Brandon and Blayne Estes took home the $500 (£300) prize with their signature dish, squirrel sausage.
