The Moon rises over San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge during a rare lunar eclipse yesterday.

The eclipse was seen across the world from Australia to Asia and North America, but was blocked by cloud in Britain. The eclipse, which is caused by the Earth's shadow falling across the lunar surface, gives the Moon an unusual, blood-red appearance. The Moon was totally eclipsed for 51 minutes and eight seconds. The next full eclipse of the Moon is not expected until 14 April 2014.
