NFL star Cam Newton has tested positive for Covid-19.
Newton, who plays for the New England Patriots, has been ruled out of his next game, according to reports.
“Late last night, we received notice that a Patriots player tested positive for Covid-19. The player immediately entered self-quarantine,” the team said in a statement on Saturday.
“Several additional players, coaches and staff who have been in close contact with the player received point of care tests this morning and all were negative for Covid-19.”
The New England Patriots were scheduled to depart for Kansas City on Saturday afternoon, but the trip is now on standby as the club awaits more test results and guidance from the NFL, according to ESPN.
The Patriots have undertaken a mass testing programme after an outbreak among the Tennessee Titans football team caused their game with the Pittsburgh Steelers to be delayed.
Newton, a quarterback, has been one of the Patriot’s top performers this season.
It is the first time this season the Patriots have been impacted by the pandemic. Until this point, none of their players had been on the Covid-19 reserve list.
