Replicating the plight of "Los 33" – the group of miners trapped half a mile underground for 69 days – a group of 33 Chilean women have barricaded themselves in a disused coal mine and gone on hunger strike to protest at government cuts. Specifically, the women are protesting against the dismissal of 12,600 workers hired to restore services following January's earthquake.
The women have called on the government in Santiago to stage their rescue, similar to the effort arranged to save the 33 miners last month.
