Donald Trump speech: Mexico says it will not send contestant to tycoon's Miss Universe contest

The announcement was just part of the ongoing fall-out against the businessman

The fall-out from Donald Trump’s remarks about immigrants from Mexico continued on Tuesday as Mexico announced it will not send a contestant to the Miss Universe contest, which the tycoon partly owns.

At the same time, a TV company backed by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim said it was scrapping a project in development with Mr Trump, while activists collected 700,000 signatures for a petition urging the US retailer Macy’s to drop his merchandise.

The Associated Press said that on Tuesday, the director of Mexico’s national beauty pageant director, said on social media that the organisation would not be sending a Mexican contestant.

Lupita Jones - a former Miss Universe - said on Twitter that she was offended and angry “like everyone else” with Mr Trump’s comments referring to Mexican immigrants as criminals and rapists.

Spanish-language network Univision and Mexican media giant Televisa have also said they would no longer be doing business with Trump.

Last week, Univision announced it was cancelling plans to air the Miss USA pageant next month and the Miss Universe competition next January.

NBC followed suit on Monday by saying it would also skip both pageants, which it co-owns with Mr Trump, and would not welcome the Republican presidential candidate back to host The Celebrity Apprentice upon its scheduled return next season.

Ora TV became the latest company to cut ties with Mr Trump over remarks he made in his recent presidential campaign kickoff speech. The company did not give any details about the project it had been developing with Mr Trump.

Mr Slim holds a majority interest in Ora TV, which produces shows including Larry King Now and Off the Grid with Jesse Ventura.

Mr Trump called NBC weak and foolish for objecting to his immigration comments. He has threatened legal action against both NBC and Univision and on Tuesday it was announced he had filed a $500m lawsuit against Univision.

The petition calling on Macy’s CEO to cut ties with Mr Trump was organised by MoveOn.org.
