Elizabeth Warren says a coronavirus epidemic is a bad time for a president 'who believes in magic'

Elizabeth Warren has branded Donald Trump the kind of leader who believes “magic” in a interview with Jimmy Kimmel.

In an interview ahead of Super Tuesday, Warren took a dig at the president and his controversial response to the growing coronavirus epidemic.

While laying out plans to deal with the coronavirus epidemic, Mr Kimmel jokingly rebuffed Ms Warren’s comment, sarcastically insisting Mr Trump believes “everybody’s getting better everything is getting better”.

After calmly agreeing with Kimmel on the president’s attitude towards the virus, Warren derided Trump’s leadership skills.

“But this really is about leadership, and it’s why when serious problems come you can’t just have a guy who believes in magic as the president of the United States,” she said.

Prior to the comment, Warren took the time to lay out her own vision for emergency measures to handle the outbreak, including free testing, vaccines, and sick pay compensation.

“We need to guarantee everyone who wants to get tested for the coronavirus you can get tested for free.

“When the vaccine comes out we need to make it for free. We need to set aside money so anyone who gets quarantined will have their paychecks reimbursed,” she said.

The senator insisted that her list of measures will work to make all Americans safer.

Mr Trump’s handling of the virus has been put under significant scrutiny as the outbreak escalates worldwide, from misunderstandings between the president and health officials and being forced to defend his comments about the virus bing a Democrat hoax.

At a rally in North Charleston, Mr Trump accused Democrats of using the virus against him. “They’re politicising it,” he said, describing the virus as “their new hoax”.

He has also been widely criticised for not appearing to take the crisis seriously at a news conference regarding the epidemic.

Following the first coronavirus death in America, the Trump administration announced new travel restrictions at a press conference on Saturday.

“A lot of progress has been made,” Mr Trump said at the conference.

“We’ve taken the most aggressive actions to confront the coronavirus they are the most aggressive taken by any country.”

Mr Trump also told Americans there is ”no need to panic“ over the virus.

The US reported at least six deaths from the coronavirus on Monday as officials warned of a “substantial outbreak” in the state of Washington, and states of emergency were declared in various parts of the country.
