US police have released pictures of the makeshift dungeon where British-born Geoffrey Portway had fantasised about raping, torturing and eating children.

A two-year investigation by the FBI led to the discovery of a hidden, sound-proofed room in the property where Portway, 40, lived fitted with a steel cage, handcuffs, knives, a small coffin and disposable scalpels, the Associated Press reports.

Detectives were led to the torture chamber in Worchester, Massachusetts, as part of a two-year investigation into a paedophile ring operating across America.

Police had linked him to a chat room where members discussed cannibalisation and child rape, according to the Boston Herald.

Court documents suggest Portway had even marked lines on a photograph of a young boy with "different cuts of meat" labelled across it.

Portway had used the chat room to speak online with other paedophiles under a pseudonym to talk about wanting to kidnap and eat children, according to the court papers. He was among dozens also arrested during the course of the investigation, that lead to the arrest of 50 and the rescue of over 160 children.

Photos also surfaced showing a child sized orange jumpsuit in the room.

He pleaded guilty in May to plotting to kidnap a child and to distributing child pornography, and will be sentenced on Tuesday.

In the sentencing papers, officials wrote: “Portway has pled guilty to some of the most vile and heinous crimes known to our society, namely participating in the sexual exploitation of young children through the possession and distribution of child pornography and soliciting the kidnapping of a child for the purpose of killing and consuming that child.”

Among those detained and charged was Michael Arnett, from Kansas, who had been working with Portway to assist him in abducting a child.

A child sized orange jump suit was also discovered in Portway's dungeon
Handcuffs were found in the room, alongside knives and a child-sized coffin
