Punxsutawney Phil has predicted that there will be six more weeks of winter, as social media users complained that it has felt like Groundhog Day for close to a year due to coronavirus pandemic restrictions.

The rodent performed his Groundhog Day duties early on Tuesday morning in Pennsylvania to predict six more weeks of winter, as a record-breaking storm dumped snow in the state and the US northeast.

One of Phil’s inner circle spoke before the prediction, noting that the last 12 months has been a “unique year", according to the Associated Press.

“People have been referencing Groundhog Day. It has felt like at times we're all living the same day over and over again,” the member said, referring to the pandemic.

“Groundhog Day also shows us that the monotony ends. The cycle will be broken,” he continued, before adding: “Today actually is Groundhog Day, there's only one. There is quite literally a new day coming over the horizon.”

The prediction this year was witnessed without a crowd, due to coronavirus restrictions, but around 15,000 spectators watched a livestream of highlights of previous Groundhog Days before the event began, according to NBC News.

Following the prediction on Tuesday morning, several social media users referenced the Bill Murray starring Groundhog Day, which followed a weatherman reliving 2 February over and over again.

US residents along with a majority of the world have been forced to stay inside for the majority of the past year, as the coronavirus pandemic has forced workplaces and businesses to shut.

Lockdown orders in various states throughout the year have meant that for long stretches, US residents have had to relive the same day repeatedly inside their own homes.

User @GreenvilleDrive referenced the 1993 film, writing on Twitter: “Everyday since last February has felt exactly the same... #GroundhogDay”.

Twitter user @GeorgeAtallah wrote: “#GroundhogDay AKA the last 325 days”, while WMURTV added: “Anyone else feel like every day is #GroundhogDay this year?”

Reporter Cristina Howorun tweeted: “Yup. It’s officially  #GroundhogDay ... and yet, it feels like we’ve been living it everyday since the pandemic started,” and @Seraxia added: “Every day feels the same!”

However, hope appears to be on the horizon as health facilities across the US are vaccinating people in vulnerable groups before preparing to inoculate the rest of the population.`

While President Joe Biden revealed last week that his administration plans to “vaccinate 300 million Americans by end of summer, early fall,” as the country continues to tackle the pandemic.

According to Johns Hopkins University, there are now more than 26.3 million people who have tested positive for the coronavirus in the US. The death toll has reached 443,365.
