A man who was recently fired returned to his former workplace on Wednesday, fatally shooting one person and injuring two others, before turning the gun on himself and taking his own life.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said that two people died, and one of the two persons injured was a police officer, who was hospitalized due to a knee injury. Police have not released the names of those injured in the shooting.

Gunshots rang out at 8:43am local time, deputies responded to reports of an active shooter at Knight Transportation in Katy, a suburb 30 miles west of Houston.

The gunman was fired from the trucking company several weeks ago and returned to the scene with a shotgun and handgun and opened fire on multiple employees. “Y’all ruined my life,” the shooter yelled out, before shooting his former supervisor, then himself.

“Other than he was terminated, we don't know anything about him,” Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman told reporters. “He parked right outside the building and came right in.”

Sheriff Hickman added that only the shotgun was fired during the shooting.

"This was the action of a lone former employee, who also died as a result of today’s events," Knight Transportation said in a statement. "One other employee was confirmed to have injuries, and was treated at the scene and released.”

According to the company website, the Phoenix-based Knight Transportation is one of the largest trucking companies in the country with more than 5,000 employees in 20 states.

Franz Elementary and Morton Ranch High School, both located across the street from the business, went on a precautionary lockdown for nearly an hour after the gunman was reported.

One Katy resident, who lives near the trucking company, shared images with KPRC that showed bullet holes in the windows of the Knight Transportation building.

Texas Congressman Michael McCaul offered his condolences on Twitter.

“Praying for Katy right now. Thanks to the [Harris County Sheriff's Office] for the quick actions and response to the shooting.”
