Ivanka Trump faces backlash after tweeting support of Oprah Winfrey's Golden Globes speech

The media mogul spoke about the civil rights movement and recent sexual misconduct allegations

Ivanka Trump was met with a wave of criticism after she tweeted in support of Oprah Winfrey’s speech at the Golden Globe Awards and the Times Up movement, speaking out against sexual harassment.

Winfrey gave the speech as she accepted the Cecil B DeMille Award and although she did not mention the names of any men specifically, she invoked the civil rights movement to talk about the recent wave of sexual misconduct allegations.

Ms Trump took to Twitter to praise Winfrey describing it as “inspiring” and called on people to "come together... and say #TIMESUP!".

But critics saw something hypocritical about Ms Trump’s tweet. Some pointed to allegations brought against her father, Donald Trump, by a group of women prior to the 2016 election, while others observed Mr Trump was once caught on tape boasting of "grabbing" women by the genitals.

The President has strongly denied all the claims of sexual harassment or assault and was even telling people in November last year that the Access Hollywood recording might be fake, according to reports.

The backlash included celebrities and members of the public, with some calling on the First Daughter to donate money to the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund, which is designed to provide financial support to women like those accusing her father.

Supermodel Chrissy Teigan offered a simple response to Ms Trump’s tweet and said: “Ew go away.”

Actor Adam Pally said: “What about the 16 counts of sexual harassment and assault levelled against your dad? Oh and the access HOLLYWOOD tape, oh and how he’s openly stated he’s sexually attracted to you his daughter, what about that?”

Tony Posnanski said: “If that inspired you then you should also check out what your dad said on a bus in 2005.”

In her speech Winfrey praised all those who are standing up against sexual harassment.

“I want all the girls watching here to know that a new day is on the horizon. When that new day finally dawns, it will be because of a lot of magnificent women, many of whom are right here in this room tonight, and some pretty phenomenal men, fighting hard to make sure that they become the leaders who take us to the time when nobody ever has to say ‘Me too’ again,” she said.

The presidential tone of Winfrey's acceptance speech led to a rush of calls for her to consider a presidential run herself in 2020 - which would make her a direct rival to Ivanka's father. Winfrey has since said she is "actively considering" running for office, according to sources close to the star.
