Chuck Schumer has revealed he won’t be officiating Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez’s wedding, and that he has a personal reason for staying away from the two native New Yorkers’ nuptials.

The senator, who represents New York State along with Kirsten Gillibrand, told TMZ on Monday that his only experience officiating a wedding has convinced him never to do it again.

Asked about Lopez and Rodriguez’s engagement, which became public over the weekend, Schumer replied: “God bless them.”

The website then asked what the senator’s answer would be if the pair asked him to lead the ceremony.

“I officiated one wedding. They got divorced after 10 months,” Schumer said. “I’m never officiating a wedding again.”

Both Lopez and Rodriguez are New York City natives – a quality they share with Schumer.

The couple announced their engagement on Instagram by both sharing the same photo of their intertwined hands, with a massive engagement ring on Lopez’s finger.

Lopez simply captioned the image with a string of heart emoji, while Rodriguez wrote: “She said yes.”
