Police launched a massive highway search near America's capital after a man was shot dead yesterday at a fuel station – apparently the tenth victim of the Washington sniper.

Roadblocks were set up along interstate 95 after witnesses reported seeing a white van speeding from the scene of the latest incident, weaving across the road. The van was described as a white Chevy-Astro.

Police were pulling over all white vans in the area, in some cases pulling the driver from the vehicle with weapons drawn.

The latest shooting took place at about 9.30am at a fuel station at Fredericksburg, Virginia, nearly 60 miles south of Washington. A single shot was heard and a man filling his car collapsed on the forecourt and died.
