A mother has shared the heartbreaking reason why she allowed her daughter to dye her hair pink.

Rachel Ann Carpenter refused to let her daughter Nevaeh dye her hair when she asked her last year.

But just days later, the youngster suffered burns to 70 per cent of her body after a tragic accident at a summer camp.

Writing on the Love What Matters Facebook page, Ms Carpenter said her daughter nearly died in the horrific incident.

It taught her life was "too short to say no all of the time", so this year when Nevaeh asked if she could die her hair, she said yes.

"This time last year she asked me if she could have pink hair and I said no. A few days later at a camp they were doing a demonstration involving fire and something went wrong and it caught her on fire. She had horrible burns over 70 per cent of her body," she said.

"This time last year we were in the hospital with her not knowing if she was going to live or not. So this time when she asked me if she could have pink hair, I said yes.

"That experience taught me you never know how much time you have left, with anyone. So say yes more often, and don't care if anyone thinks your child with pink hair is ridiculous !! (within reason lol)."

Facebook users responded with an outpouring of sympathy for Nevaeh's story and many shared pictures of their own children, who they had allowed to dye their hair.

Roni O'Quinn wrote: "She looks amazing. Bless her heart!!! Good job Mom!!! I have done pink hair on my daughter several times. This was when she was five. It's hair. Life is suppose to be fun."

Nickie Storey-Bailey said: "I'm so glad she's okay, and I think she looks adorable!"
