Two college football players have been charged with rape and kidnapping following allegations that they attacked a woman in an apartment and forced her to film a statement saying it was consensual while they laughed at her.

Ohio State University defensive players Amir I Riep and Jahsen L Wint, both 21 years old, were booked into Franklin County jail on Wednesday and are being held without bond, according to jail records.

Mr Riep is a senior cornerback from Columbus, Ohio, and Mr Wint is senior safety originally from Brooklyn, New York.

Police charged the men late on Tuesday. They're scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday.

According to a police affidavit, a woman told Mr Riep she didn't want to continue having consensual sex with him when Mr Wint entered the room and asked to join.

The woman in the affidavit alleges that the men raped her then told her she needed to say that what had happened was "consensual on a video recording while laughing at her", according to the affidavit.

In a statement, Ohio State spokesman Ben Johnson said the university is aware of their arrest and criminal charges against them and has suspended the two students from "all activities involving the football program".

The university's prestigious football team has won eight national championships, most recently in 2014, and 38 Big Ten conference championships, the second most in the conference and the third most conference titles of any school in any conference. It also had 10 undefeated seasons, and the team's worth has topped more than $1.5 billion, one of the most-valued college teams in the US.
